Is an RDS Device CAL the same as a Windows Server Device CAL?
No. These are two different products. A Windows Server CAL allows a device to use server services such as files, printing, and Active Directory. An RDS CAL is an ADDITIONAL license required to use remote desktop sessions. You need both types for every device connecting through RDS.
Does a thin client require an RDS Device CAL?
Yes. Every device connecting to a Remote Desktop Services session, whether it is a thin client, computer, tablet, or zero client, must have an RDS Device CAL assigned to it, unless the user has an RDS User CAL instead. Thin clients are not exempt from this requirement.
How many concurrent RDS sessions can I run?
RDS CAL licenses do not limit the number of simultaneous sessions. That depends on server performance, including RAM and CPU resources. 50 Device CALs cover 50 devices, while the number of active sessions at one time depends on how many the server can handle.
Can I transfer an RDS Device CAL to another device?
Yes, after 90 days from the last assignment. In the event of device failure, it can be reassigned immediately. The RDS licensing server manages assignment automatically, but keeping your own internal register is recommended for audit purposes.
Do RDS CAL 2022 licenses work with Windows Server 2019?
Yes. RDS CAL 2022 licenses allow you to use RDS on Windows Server 2022 and older versions such as 2019, 2016, and 2012 R2. A newer CAL version always covers older server versions.
